This outstanding hardcover text covers the interaction of aerodynamic forces and elastic structures with unusual thoroughness. It is directed to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, but it has proven highly useful as well to designers and engineers concerned with flutter, structural dynamics, flight loads and related subjects. An introductory chapter covers concepts of aerodynamics, elasticity and mechanical vibrations. Chapters 2 through 11 contain a survey of aeroelastic problems, their historical background, basic physical concepts and the principles of analysis. Chapters 12 through 15 contain the fundamentals of oscillating airfoil theory and a brief summary of experimental results. The physical assumptions involved in the mathematical formulation of a problem are always emphasized, so that the degree of approximation relative to the real physical system can be seen, facilitating the reader's realization of the direction in which future improvement may lie. Each chapter is followed by a bibliography.
