An ardent Waterfowler and fly-fisherman, Petrie's articles, essays and stories have appeared in many outdoor and conservation periodicals. He has twice received the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation's Conservation Communicator of the Year Award. Petrie is also a past recipient of the prestigious Gordon MacQuarrie Award, presented by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, for distinguished contributions in environmental communications.
