From the Publisher
Birding is considered one of the largest and fastest-growing outdoor hobbies or sports in the world. Millions of “back-to-nature” enthusiasts are buying binoculars and joining birding clubs to explore the exciting world of birdwatching in the wild. But birding is much more than just watching birds. It is learning to identify and carefully observe hundreds of the 9600 species of birds that can be found on our planet. It involves taking classes and studying field guides to familiarize yourself with the plumage and behavior of each species on your checklist.
Birding can be an individual experience for the loner or a social experience for the joiner. There are hundreds of organizations, observatories and sanctuaries that you can join to enhance your enjoyment of the natural world. These societies and clubs often arrange guided tours to major migration routes and “hot spots” around the globe. But you can start right in your own back yard by carefully recording the number and behavior of species that visit your garden and bird feeders.
Like many other fortunate people I was exposed to the wonder and beauty of nature when my father ordered National Geographic magazines for the coffee table and my mother planned camping vacations for our family of eight. We were also privileged to explore mountains, rivers and lakes with the Scouts at an early age. Later I joined conservation groups and attended workshops and went on birding tours. I will forever be grateful for the time, effort and devotion that others have invested in me to open the amazing door of discovery to the natural world that beckons just beyond our doorstep.
Too often we are obliged to keep our “nose to the grindstone” and then spend extensive hours in front of the TV or computer. No wonder most people seem to feel cut off from nature. They miss the serenity and thrill of the wildness that is all around us but is separated from us by a gulf of ignorance and misunderstanding. Many are afraid of nature because it can be dangerous (and sensible precautions must be taken.) Somewhere deep in our human nature is a longing for contact with this lost world. Birding is a safe, exciting and inexpensive way to recapture this close contact with the awesome wonders of nature. It is available to everyone who is interested in learning about new places and new creatures (and meeting nice people!) See Table of Contents or Best Birding Websites, and let your journey begin!
