From the Publisher
This book addresses one of the most serious environmental threats to our nation -- mountaintop-removal mining. In this collection of essays, fiction, and poetry, 35 Kentucky writers explore all aspects of mountaintop removal in Kentucky.
In April of 2005 a group of Kentucky authors participated in a "Mountaintop Removal Tour" organized by Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. After witnessing first-hand the devastation of this type of mining, the inadequacy of reclamation of mining sites, and hearing from residents regarding the effects of mountaintop-removal mining on the land and the people who live there, this book was conceived.
The goal of this book is not cessation of all coal mining, but to demand responsible mining practices and an end to the unnecessary destruction to the land, people, and economy of the eastern Kentucky coalfields and the planet caused by mountaintop removal. Every day many thousands of Kentuckians and residents of the Mississippi valley drink the water from streams that originate in the coal mining region of Kentucky. It's not just a local problem.
