At a time when the world is taking more interest than ever in the fate of North America's grizzly bear population, two avid naturalists take us inside one of the grizzlies' most inspiring strongholds. Fortress of the Grizzlies delivers a unique perspective based on Dan and Wendy's years of respectful interaction with a community of grizzlies, challenging our ideas about this powerful, but also vulnerable creature.
Fortress of the Grizzlies highlights:
-The story of one family of bears, based on observations recorded over a ten-year period.
-New insights into how to predict and understand grizzly behaviour.
-Descriptions of individual grizzlies in the sanctuary.
-Stunning full-colour photography throughout.
About the Author
Dan Wakeman has lived in the company of grizzlies over the last fifteen seasons as only one of two licensed guides in the Khutzeymateen, near the border between Alaska and British Columbia. He was instrumental in helping to establish the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, and he and the sanctuary have been featured in National Geographic and on two Discovery Channel documentary specials aired in 26 countries. He observes about 350 grizzly bears up close each year.
Wendy Shymanski, a professional photographer, has worked with Dan since the mid-1990s and has amassed a folio of exquisite colour photographs of the bears in this remote sanctuary. She has photographed nature since 1985 and her images have appeared in Canadian Geographic, Beautiful British Columbia, Equinox, and numerous other magazines. Her other book credits include Audubon and Daybreak 2002.
