Review
“To quote the author, this bibliography "encompasses the different values American have sought in or attributed to the wilderness." Most of the entries fall into the areas of "wilderness experience," statements of personal, political, or scientific belief, historical analysis, or philosophy. To a much lesser extent, biography, research on public attitudes, and literature are also included. In this highly selective bibliography, books are most frequently cited; only one fifth of the entries are for journal articles. Annotations of from 50 to 200 words accompany each entry. An index by author is included. A small index of topics emphasizes geographic areas, people, and major concepts. Although purposely narrower in focus, this book is most likely to be compared to The Natural Environment: An Annotated Bibliography on Attitudes and Values by M. Anglemyer and E.R. Seagraves (1985). About one third of the 324 works cited here postdate The Natural Environment. Recommended for general collections serving upper-division undergraduate and graduate students.”–Choice
