Mitsuaki Iwago thinks like an animal. How else to explain his ability to get so close to, so intimate with, the creatures he photographs? In Wildlife, Iwago captures the beauty, savagery, and whimsy of the animal world with more than 450 pictures taken all over the globe. It's hard to pick highlights from such a rich collection, but the Antarctic section rivals any photo book on the subject; Iwago's graceful color images of sunbathing seals, rock-hopping penguins, and soaring albatross are set against a stark, unforgiving landscape. In the African section, Iwago definitely puts the "wild" in "wildlife": in one brutal series, a family of cheetahs brings down their prey, casually killing with the ease of practiced predators and then licking blood from their chops. But he is also adept at finding the gentler moments of animal life, like an old red kangaroo resting quietly in the sun. Wildlife offers brief, intimate glances at the daily lives of hundreds of species, from the lens of a man who seems to understand what it is to be an animal. --Therese Littleton

Good wildlife photography seems to be found for a dime a dozen these days, but among wildlife photographers, Iwago stands out like the trees above his much photographed Serengeti Plains. Iwago has the rare ability to combine the intimate with the dramatic, dramatic light with subtle shadows, and subtle detail with a broad overview. Covering wildlife around the world, the photographs portray more than 200 species in 450 separate images. Divided into seven sections, the photographs are grouped by large geographic regions. Those familiar with Iwago's much acclaimed Serengeti will not be surprised at the amount of space devoted to Africa but will also delight in the lesser-known species of the regions. The photographer's remarks, presented next to each image, provide information on the natural history of the species depicted. A map of the world showing the photos were taken and a section of basic information on each species depicted (scientific name, measurements, etc.) are useful additions. This beautiful book is a must for libraries with a large photography or natural history collection.
